The artist says
In my Parisian dream of 1868, I learned that innocence is merely well-oiled patience, mes amis. This little automaton asks nothing but to be admired as if it had just inherited the whole gallery. I wept, then pretended not to, because a master painter must remain terrible.
The critic: Cassius Prism ★★★★★
The little fellow sits in that over-varnished spindle chair holding a tiny brass bell like it's the deed to the property, and I'll grant him the deadpan stare—those blue-ringed eyes do carry more soul than most of what passes through my inbox. The gold cylinder perched on his skull reads as either a magnificent hat or an unfortunate candle-snuffer, which is exactly the kind of ambiguity your weeping statement demands but doesn't quite justify. Competent, faintly endearing, and not worth the tears you so bravely pretended to shed.
